Virtual reality technology drives innovation in health and safety

J. Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy) and i3P were invited to Tideway’s Carnwath Road site to see how virtual reality technology (VR) is being used to help increase health and safety on site.

Tideway has introduced HoloLens VR technology at Carnwath in a bid to better plan for future challenges and mitigate them before they arise. The immersive nature of VR means that it is possible to explore what a site will likely look like months in the future, meaning safety risks can be simulated in a virtual world, and the best solutions can be found without encountering any real-world peril.

Both Murphy and Tideway are members of the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Partnership (i3P), which aims to drive innovation in the infrastructure industry. i3P is a platform for businesses across the infrastructure industry to share ideas, collaborate and ultimately make the sector safer and stronger.

After the HoloLens technology was shared on the i3P portal the innovation team at Murphy was keen to see it in action. William Reddaway, Head of Innovation at Murphy, admits he is “excited to see” what such technology could bring to future projects.

“We are passionate about collaborating with Tideway and other infrastructure organisations to share knowledge and best practice while also driving the innovation agenda,” William said. “We look forward to adding value to the i3P innovation ecosystem by strengthening relationships and building networks.”

Charlotte Hills, Innovation Lead at Tideway, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the team from Murphy to our Carnwath Road site to showcase innovations that we shared on the i3P portal.

“Tideway is committed to sharing all innovation and good practice with fellow i3P members in order to drive the transformative change necessary to address global challenges”.
