Murphy win contract to deliver the next stage of East West Rail, Bicester to Bletchley

Following two years of Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), Murphy have been awarded a £56m contract by The East West Rail Alliance to deliver the Main Earthworks and Drainage Package on East West Rail, Oxford to Bletchley.

Work on this stage of the East West Rail project to link Oxford to Bletchley and Milton Keynes is already underway as the existing mothballed railway lines between Bicester and Bletchley are upgraded. Once complete, this will provide new train services, shorter journey times, lower transport costs and reduce the amount of traffic on the roads.

The scope of the work is to construct the main earthworks associated with the new line. Parts of the route will be widened to comply with the latest standards specified by Network Rail.

Works will involve:

  • Construction of 15.6km of earthworks on the main line with on-line track and off-line drainage works, including culvert replacements.
  • Construction of two off-line highway embankments – Verney Junction and Salden Wood.
  • Excavation of Compensation Flood Storage areas (approx. 1,300m3 of cohesive material)

The main works began at the start of March and will run through to May 2022 with around 75% of the works completed by November 2021.
