Murphy installs enclosure for war memorial

The project team on the Bacton Gas Terminal provided and installed a decorative wrought iron enclosure around a war memorial.

The memorial pays tribute to the Lockheed Hudson bomber crew from the Second World War. The squadron comprised:

  • John MacGillivray, age 25
  • Roger Bourne Wark, age 26
  • Wilfred Albert Sayer, age 21
  • John Stuart Brown, age 21

They were all part of a 500 squadron at Bircham Newton, who conducted reconnaissance flights and bombing raids on coastal targets.

Understanding the significance of the war memorial, the team worked with the local community to install an enclosure around the site. They commissioned a local wrought iron specialist to fabricate and manufacture an enclosure decorated with poppies to pay respect to the young men who lost their lives as part of the crash on 16 January 1942.

The memorial enclosure was erected in time for Armistice Day 2019.
