Church Road Bridge, in Garston, has now been successfully reopened. The bridge and road have been closed to pedestrians and traffic since last April.
On behalf of Network Rail, Murphy carried out a new underbridge replacement, as part of the Great North Rail Project upgrade.
The scope of works involved the replacement of a single-track ballasted wrought iron underbridge deck. The new bridge consisted of two precast concrete cill beams and a monolithic precast concrete U-deck including handrail walkways. In addition, the team also removed two redundant ballasted wrought iron underbridge decks.
Structural defects found in the old bridge meant it had to be entirely rebuilt to modern standards.
The upgrade works will provide a safe and reliable crossing over Church Road for freight trains for decades to come.
Jamie Skillin, Murphy project manager, said: “Church Road has been a challenging and technically complex project.
Following late land access to the site, the Murphy team worked with Network Rail to install the bridge safely and ahead of time.”
Joel Farrell, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “Work to rebuild Church Road Bridge has been completed as part of the Great North Rail Project and will ensure the bridge remains safe and reliable for the next 125 years.
I’d like to say a huge thanks to members of the community in Garston who have been inconvenienced by the closure of Church Road.”
MP for Garston and Halewood, Maria Eagle, officially reopened the road and bridge last Friday, 28th June 2019, three days ahead of schedule.
