Project Outline

This design, build and operate (DBO) project saw Wexford County Council engage Murphy to deliver a new wastewater treatment plant along with collection and pumping infrastructure to serve the town of New Ross. This project included:

  • Construction of a new 16,000 PE located at Marshmeadows to the south New Ross.
  • Network upgrades and new foul and stormwater pumping stations located along the quays in the town of New Ross.

Key Challenges

The wastewater treatment plant is constructed entirely overground on a raised stone mattress to ensure it is protected from flooding from the River Barrow.

Project Delivery & Innovations

The wastewater treatment process at New Ross comprises:

  • Preliminary treatment (screening and grit removal).
  • Stormwater holding tank.
  • CASSTM SBR basins.
  • Sludge thickening.
  • Sludge dewatering.
  • Liquid sludge import facility.
  • Odour abatement system.
  • Treated effluent outfall to the River Barrow.

Key Facts

  • This project ended the practice of untreated raw untreated sewage being discharged into the River Barrow at New Ross.
  • Murphy have been operating this plant since live commissioning commenced in 2010.
