Project Outline

This design, build and operate (DBO) project saw Irish Water engage Murphy to deliver new a major upgrade to the water collection and treatment infrastructure serving the catchment areas of Gorey and Courtown. This project included:

  • Expansion of Courtown Wastewater Treatment Plant from 12,000 to 35,000 PE.
  • Sludge treatment capacity increased to 60,000 PE and import acceptance facilities provided to allow the plant serve as a sludge hub.
  • Decommissioning of Gorey Wastewater Treatment Plant and repurposing of tanks to provide screening, storm attenuation and pumping station to transfer to Courtown.
  • Upgrades to Courtown Harbour Pumping Station and Ballintray Pumping Station.
  • Network upgrades and refurbishment works.

Key Challenges

The key challenge which was met on this project was to ensure that we succeeded in delivering the upgrade works without any interruption in either available treatment capacity or performance

Project Delivery & Innovations

  • The expanded Courtown Wastewater Treatment Plant has been designed for ease of expansion due to future population growth.
  • All preliminary treatment infrastructure at the works has been sized for 45,000 PE capacity.

  • Major improvement in water quality in the Banoge River.
  • Bathing water improvements allowing Courtown to achieve Blue Flag status at this popular tourist destination.
