Murphy rally around local sports hero

The Murphy team in Newbridge has come together to raise funds for a local sporting hero who tragically suffered a stroke while playing Gaelic football.

At just 17-years of age Adam Burke was part of the Two Mile House (TMH) team who made history as the first club in Kildare to ever win an All-Ireland Club Championship – with Adam the top scorer on the day. Just three-years later Adam suffered a stroke while playing the game he was so passionate about. The stroke left his right arm paralysed and greatly affected his verbal communication.

Many in the Newbridge office were touched by Adam’s story, especially project manager, Chris Fox, who is good friends with Adam’s brother-in-law.

This year, family and friends organised a major fundraising event, ‘Run for Adam Burke’, backed by a host of sporting celebrities, local businesses and clubs from all over the county and beyond. There was a 5km run or a 10km run, followed by a dinner and Q&A session with the stars. On hearing of the event Chris Fox was one of the first to sign up to the running event.

Chris Fox said: “Over 3,000 people registered for the run which shows the great community spirit within the GAA in Ireland.”
