Storecon Yard, Dublin Port

Project outline

Dublin Port Company appointed Murphy to carry out the site clearance, preparation and redevelopment of the existing port lands at Storecon Yard.

The site, located between Tolka Quay Road and Promenade Road in Dublin, required redevelopment in order to provide additional storage space for Dublin Port tenants. The works at Storecon Yard were carried out over a five month period in 2015 over the 32,000m² site. The project team consisted of the Dublin Port Company management team, DBFL engineering consultants, our site team and a local concrete supplier. The work included the installation of 30 metre high mast lighting.

Key challenges

Installing the high mast lighting, while all other construction activities continued, meant managing space well in order to meet the programme of works. The key to overcoming this challenge was strong collaboration with the many stakeholders on the project. We worked with the client in order to cause minimum disruption to activities. The project was completed on time and on budget.

Project delivery and innovations

We were responsible for the groundworks, which involved installing 300mm fibre reinforced concrete slabs, removing made ground for the construction of concrete bases and HD bold assemblies for the mast lighting. We also:

  • Installed drainage, ducting, concrete footpaths and kerbing
  • Delivered significant electrical installations that were required for CCTV, automated gate motors and 30 metre high mast lighting
  • Fabricated and installed a structural steel-framed fence surrounding the site; three new automated gates were also installed by our site team

The high mast lighting reduced power consumption on site by over 84%, as the old lighting used 2,135 kWh and the new only 325 kWh. The proactive attitude and positive contributions by all the team was a perfect example of project teamwork, and contributed to the successful delivery of the project on time.

Key facts
  • Removal of 7,500m³ of made ground, introducing a CBM capping layer and laying 28,000m³ of 300mm fibre reinforced concrete slab

  • Installation of concrete, uPVC storm and foul drainage, manholes and gullies with associated attenuation containment (each 500m³ capacity) and oil interceptors
  • Installation of ducting for ESB cables, CCTV, telecom, power and lighting distribution cables
  • Electrical installation including substation cabinets, distribution and metre boards, cabling and terminations to all installed electrical units (CCTV, automated gate motors, high mast luminaires, etc.)
  • Installation of 30m high masts and head sets
  • Mechanical installation of 550 linear metres of 150mm HPPE water main, valves and chambers
  • Construction of 600m of reinforced concrete footpath with in-situ concrete kerb
  • Fabrication and installation of 670m of 4m high structural steel-framed fence with close mesh panels (Type Kilmainham 358)
