Murphy Ground Engineering mobilised their new 3rd Generation KR709 Klemm restricted access piling rig to Iver to construct a bearing pile and contiguous piled wall solution in support of J. Murphy & Sons LOCROS WEST project (part of London Overground Crossrail scheme).

The scheme will see 11 new lifts, power upgrades and over bridges, providing step free access at Hanwell, Langley, Iver and Taplow stations. A new ticket office will also be built at Iver.

Project delivery and innovations:

To support the works a Klemm KR709-3 rig and “low headroom” mast were purchased to allow the teams to operate in the tightest “restricted access” environments.

The rig is controlled by radio remote control allowing for smooth, minute adjustments of the components while ensuring the health and safety of the rig operator and crew.

A special, “long-life” concrete mix was designed to provide an approximate 5hr “openlife”. This was crucial to allow the placement of 12m long reinforcement cages, without the requirement to vibrate the cages in.

The rig and masts are versatile pieces of kit and their purchase introduced additional capability to Murphy providing flexibility and options within Murphy's fleet of rigs.

In keeping with the Murphy Ten Year Plan, it demonstrates Murphy's commitment to providing the newest, safest, cleanest plant on the market and complies with the latest Emissions directives to contribute to reducing harmful emissions, generated during projects.

Key challenges

The nature of the site was extremely restrictive meaning man/machine interface provided the greatest health and safety risk on the project. To manage this, no plant was allowed to move without the explicit instruction of the banksman.

Additionally, the works were conducted in what was still a “live” station so protection to the public and railway assets was of paramount importance.
