Project outline

LM is a joint venture of Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons Ltd, two of the UK’s leading contractors. Its remit is to prepare the route for the UK’s new high-speed rail line, ready for full construction to commence. LM has an 80km section of HS2’s phase one, from Long Itchington Wood near Kenilworth, into Birmingham city centre at Curzon Street, and out again northwards Lichfield, where Phase 1 will join the existing West Coast Main Line.

Key challenges

The delivery of the new rail project is a highly complex task, and preparation of the route for the main works contractors presents diverse challenge. The LM team works closely and collaboratively with the client to plan, design and deliver dozens of work packages covering archaeology, demolition, land clearance and environmental mitigation, as well as diversion and supporting construction works for utilities, roads and services affected by the new line.
This must be achieved working with key stakeholders along the line of route, and adhering to the legal provisions of HS2’s Act.

Project delivery/ innovation

LM is currently working with over 50 Tier 2 contractors, at over 600 individual work package locations. With the help of our team and supply chain , we are creating opportunities for apprentices and graduates, as well as offering work experience and training for young people and the unemployed.

LM is leading Equality Diversity and Inclusion across the wider project, and was recently named as Team of the Year by a leading independent body.

LM has challenged its suppliers to innovate in their delivery programmes. Results to date include a novel initiative for tracking protected species (a vital part of our work) and the use of solar cells to power a site compound.

Perhaps the most innovative element is in the virtual design of bridges, where digital engineering and the JV’s offsite manufacturing capabilities have combined to create a modular construction solution, which will be utilised in several major structures.
