Murphy achieves global award for procurement and supply chain excellence

Engineering and construction specialists, J. Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy), has successfully achieved the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) ‘Procurement Excellence Programme’ (PEP) at Standard level.

PEP is a globally-recognised award that demonstrates how well a business is performing with their procurement and supply chain activities. The award drives regular improvements and highlights how procurement is a key part of an organisation’s business and strategy.

Murphy recently benchmarked their procurement team against the requirements of the Standard level. Then, they identified any skills and capability gaps, which they are working to fill.

The CIPS PEP thoroughly vetted Murphy against five key dimensions: leadership and organisation, strategy and policy, people, processes and systems, and performance management.

Laura Walsh, Supply Chain Manager at Murphy said, “As a direct result of the CIPS PEP, we were able to build upon the strong foundations of an already robust procurement function. We have introduced a procurement policy and intellectual property policy and also now have clarity between the operational procurement procedure and the strategic procurement procedure”.

Alan Martin, Head of the Procurement Excellence at CIPS said, “It was good to work with a team willing to learn, adapt and change. They challenged their own systems and processes to think in a different way, to meet the requirements of PEP.

“Collaborative working is a key differentiator in teams that are successful. Well done to all involved who pushed to benchmark themselves and their activities against the standard level”.

Ben McCluskey, Head of Group Strategic Procurement at Murphy said, “It is a great achievement for the procurement team and the greater Murphy group.

“We are very proud to be one of the few construction firms in the UK to achieve this Standard. It is a testament to our processes, policies and procedures”.

Murphy now has the capability to effectively identify and measure their performance levels in procurement and supply. This will enhance their staff performance and help with recruitment and performance reviews.
