Project Outline

Under this early contractor involvement (ECI) project, Murphy collaborated with Northern Ireland Water and Royal Haskoning DHV to develop, construct and commission a solution for a 50,000 PE expansion of Dungannon WWTW using the Nereda® aerobic granular sludge process.

Key Challenges

Dungannon WWTW was a plant with process equipment reaching the end of its useful life, a rising hydraulic and biological load and a high industrial in the influent. The challenge in this project was to deliver a solution which:

  • Delivered new infrastructure consistent with NI Water standard specifications.
  • Satisfied the NI Utility Regulatory requirement use of contemporary treatment technology with high OPEX efficiency for large scale treatment facilities.
  • Provided NI Water with a test facility to measure the performance of the Nereda® process with a view to future investment decisions.

Project Delivery & Innovations

  • Murphy as the lead process contractor was responsible for overall project design, project management and procurement of all equipment, including fulfilling the role of Principal Designer.
  • The solution developed by Murphy Process Designer in association with the patent holders, RHDHV, was for a two tank NEREDA® solution for 50,000 PE with space allocation for a further 50,000 PE, meaning that the works will be able to cope with its increasing current demand and maintain regulatory compliance.

Key Facts

The overall solution delivered by Murphy included:

  • Forward feed and NEREDA® reactor feed pumping stations.
  • NEREDA® aerobic granular sludge reactors.
  • Fats, oils and grease removal system.
  • Influent screening.
  • EICA infrastructure.
  • Flow buffering and distribution systems.
