Project outline

Murphy was contracted to develop a €30m energy centre by Glanpower Ltd, on behalf of JFD Projects. Energy will be produced through Pyrolysis. This is a process that uses waste organic material and converts it into forms of usable energy that can be consumed at the source or supplied via the electricity grid. It will generate fifty to seventy full time jobs for the local Tullamore community.

Murphy’s scope was to design, install and test the 350mm x 350mm concrete precast piles, to serve as foundations for the steel framed building in very soft bog land. Three hundred and twenty seven piles were driven to approx. 11m depth, based on SWL of 1000kN. Shay Murtagh Concrete, precast concrete producers, supplied all the piles.

We have high regard for this company and would easily recommend them as the best option for these type of works. We (JFD Projects), as the managing contractor, would like to commend Murphy International Ltd. for the work they carried out on the above mentioned project. Their methodologies and systems of work ensured a safe, controlled and well managed contract from inception through to completion. - Tadhg Sheedy, Senior Engineer, JFD Projects

Project delivery and innovation

We used our experience and knowledge, combined with our professional systems for works, quality and safety, to bring this project to conclusion.

The successful design of the foundations, as well as the logistics of working on site, involved close collaboration with the client and designers. Our approach was to provide clarification, propose solutions, agree solutions, implement and test.

Shay Murtagh precast piles were usable 3 days after production achieving 85N.

Key challenges

A key challenge was that the design criteria changed as the job started. Murphy worked closely with resident and design engineers, Byrne Looby, to clarify changes and agree a way forward.

A risk was that the design criteria would not be met. Therefore, preliminary trail piles were carried out, in order to drive analysis and the successful outcome of the project. Our approach was to provide clarification, solution, implementation and testing, which helped all parties involved in the project.

The handover / safety file was comprehensive and informative, allowing us to certify and stand over the contract.
