I’m Fern, and I’m currently doing an apprenticeship in payroll, working towards my Level 3 qualification.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship after being in dead end jobs with no room for progression or growth. There’s an assumption that you only do apprenticeships straight out of school but that’s just not true! I was 24 when I started my apprenticeship and I feel like I’m doing it at the right time in my life, where I can give it my all.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship?

I’m really enjoying working and learning at the same time. I have one study day per week, which allows me to catch up on any online modules or work set by my tutor. However, I’m constantly learning whilst working, shadowing my peers and asking them thousands of questions per day.
Since my first day, the ladies in payroll have been so supportive and patient with me and I can’t thank them enough for my growth. I have learnt so much in the last ten months.

What is it like to be an apprentice at Murphy?

I am now solely responsible for the processing of both monthly and weekly subsistence, as well as assisting with the weekly payroll, approving expenses and answering the many queries we get day to day.

Murphy is so supportive of my growth, my manager Nichola Gates always puts my course as a priority and can’t do enough to assist in my learning. We have already spoken about potential qualifications I can go into upon completing my current course. That’s what I love about being an apprentice at Murphy, they are really investing in me and it gives me the confidence I need to keep going. There are so many apprentices at Murphy, just like me, learning and working. I think it’s such a great way to run a business - invest in your employees and watch them grow!
