To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we caught up with Emma Rettey, Graduate Civil Engineer based on site in Saltley, Birmingham.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A nice early start with a big coffee going through paperwork, before spending most of the day on site setting out and checking the work of the Murphy team and sub-contractors on site, with a few design and progress meetings thrown in.

What are you most proud of so far?

The relationships I have made - I’ve got a good relationship with the Murphy team, sub-contractors and the client.

What have you found most challenging?

Getting over imposter syndrome! Even though I’m taken seriously on site and am respected and supported in the team, I used to struggle with feeling like a ‘proper’ engineer.

What are your career goals?

To firstly establish myself and be a good engineer.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself…

My hair colour changes more than the seasons! At the moment it's half black and half blonde which is quite a normal colour for me.
