Butler Water Treatment Works (WTW) is a new-build facility delivered for South East Water to provide a secure drinking water supply to the Maidstone and Ashford areas in Kent. The Butler Wastewater Treatment Works project involved the design and construction of a full integrated groundwater treatment facility providing a robust, flexible and fully compliant treatment solution. Murphy was appointed as the Major Projects Framework contractor by South East Water to deliver the Butler Wastewater Treatment Works scheme from outline design through to commissioning. The site was designed to treat up to 20 MLD, reducing reliance on bulk imports from Southern Water’s Burham supply. In addition to acting as Principal Contractor, technical services teams at Murphy also completed process/MEICA design and system integration and steel fabrication for multiple areas of the site, including the main building. Several constraints influenced the design of Butler Wastewater Treatment Works, including the uncertainty surrounding the performance and water quality of newly developed groundwater sources. The project scope included: Raw water abstraction Chlorine dioxide pre-oxidation system Two-stream cartridge filtration systems Five concrete gravity granular activated carbon (GAC) filters UV and sodium hypochlorite disinfection Twin chlorine contact tanks High lift pumping facilities Wash water and sludge handling infrastructure New treatment building Ventilation and off-gas management systems Instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) The Butler WTW facility represents a significant investment in water supply infrastructure in Kent and is well-positioned to support population growth while maintaining high standards of water quality, operational reliability and regulatory compliance.
