An ambitious programme to upgrade and future‑proof critical infrastructure

Members of our Water and Process Engineering team- Operations Director Anthony Brennan and Projects Director Patrick Maguire attended the official launch of Uisce Éireann Irish Water‘s upgraded Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) alongside Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage of Ireland, James Browne TD, this week.

Since 2021, Murphy has been privileged to partner with Uisce Éireann at Ringsend, contributing to several major projects as part of their ambitious programme to upgrade and future‑proof one of Ireland’s most critical pieces of public infrastructure. Serving a population equivalent of 2.4 million people, Ringsend WwTP treats 40% of all wastewater in Ireland.

Our work here has included:

  • Phosphorous Fixation Facility – the first of its kind in Ireland and the largest in Europe. This award‑winning installation captures phosphorus from wastewater and converts it into a valuable fertiliser product used in agriculture. Murphy continues to operate and maintain this facility on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
  • Sludge Line Enhancement (SLE) Project – delivered in 2023, increasing the capacity and efficiency of the plant’s advanced anaerobic digestion system and enhancing biosolids management.
  • Hybrid 2 Works – the latest major milestone in Uisce Éireann’s upgrade strategy. Delivered ahead of programme in December, this project involved a full mechanical, electrical and civil retrofit of the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) basins, each of which plays a crucial role in the biological treatment process.

Across each of these projects, Murphy has been honoured to support Uisce Éireann in their important work to strengthen the functionality, reliability and environmental performance of Ireland’s most important wastewater treatment asset. This work reflects our wider mission to improve life by delivering world‑class infrastructure that safeguards communities and supports a more sustainable future.
