Tunnelling work now successfully completed Murphy, as part of United Utilities’ Enterprise framework, recently reached a key milestone at Peel Green Road in Eccles where a tunnel boring machine was used to install a new larger sewer in the road to help reduce the risk of flooding in the area. With tunnelling work now successfully completed, the road was reopened in time for the Bank Holiday weekend. Now that the first phase of the project is complete, future works will focus on connecting the new sewer into the existing network and bringing it into use. These will be delivered under lane closures later in the summer. Jim Scholes, Delivery Manager for United Utilities, shared: “The work on Peel Green Road is an important part of our wider work at Eccles wastewater treatment works. The completion of tunnelling activities is a big milestone for the area as we look to reduce the flooding risk to the local community. We’d like to thank them for their patience whilst this essential work has been taking place.” Nick Field, Project Manager at Murphy, said: “The Enterprise team worked together closely to ensure that Peel Green Road was delivered both sensitively and efficiently, given its residential setting. We carefully managed the process to ensure that Peel Green Road could be reopened as quickly as possible.” The project is being delivered through United Utilities’ new Enterprise delivery model which brings together seven design and construction partners (C2V, Costain, Jacobs, MWH, MMB, Murphy, and Kier), plus United Utilities, into one integrated team. Whilst the work at Peel Green Road focuses on reducing flooding for the local community, United Utilities is investing more than £525m to upgrade the resilience of the sewer network and improve water quality across Salford through a number of projects over the next four years. This will include upgrades to its treatments works in Salford and Eccles and additional storage created in the sewer network at a project off Liverpool Road as well as a rainwater management scheme in Adelphi Village. United Utilities is currently investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
