PROJECT OUTLINE

As part of the overall design, build and operate (DBO) project to refurbish and expand Staleen Water Treatment Plant, Murphy delivered a comprehensive control and automation solution for this critical piece of water infrastructure serving over 70,000 residents and commercial customers in Drogheda, South Louth and East Meath.

KEY CHALLENGES

To design and deliver an integrated controls and automation solution encompassing:

  • New controls hardware for expanded elements of the works.
  • Replacement of legacy hardware for retained and refurbished elements of the existing works.
  • New SCADA and communications system for the entire project

PROJECT DELIVERY & INNOVATIONS

The solution delivered on this project included:

  • A network of eight OMRON CJ2M PLCs.
  • ABB variable speed drives using Ethernet/IP communications to PLC for control and monitoring.
  • Hirschmann Ethernet Hiper-Ring Network with VLAN segregation supporting PLC, VSD and CCTV systems.
  • 5km long fibre optic communications link from the treatment plant to the raw water pumping station at Roughgrange on the River Boyne.
  • Complete upgrade of MV, LV and control system infrastructure at Roughgrange Pumping Station.
  • Janitza Power Monitors installed for equipment across the project monitored on SCADA using ModbusTCP.
  • New SCADA system for the complete expanded works using Wonderware InTouch SCADA System with hot standby redundancy.

KEY FACTS

  • Operational throughput and performance at Staleen Water Treatment Plant were maintained throughout the project delivery phase.
  • The Murphy control and automation solution for this project has been critical to delivering major improvements in capacity, reliability and quality of the water supply to the Drogheda, Louth and East Meath areas.
