PROJECT OUTLINE

This project saw Murphy replace the obsolete SCADA system serving Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Plant with a cutting edge solution providing enhanced functionality and flexibility tailored to the plant operations staff’s needs.

KEY CHALLENGES

Mutton Island is located in Galway Bay which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and is a location of outstanding natural beauty, serving as an amenity to residents of Galway and tourists.

Murphy delivered this project without any interruption to the operation or performance of the plant ensuring the surrounding environs in Galway Bay were protected throughout.

PROJECT DELIVERY & INNOVATIONS

The solution delivered on this project included:

  • Complete upgrade of the existing Fibre Optic Network communications system for the entire site.
  • Development of new SCADA system using Wonderware InTouch running on Windows 10 and migration of plant and migration of plant from old to new system.
  • Provision of Cisco Wi-Fi Access Points across the site to allow for dedicated SCADA access by operations staff.
  • Supply and configuration of portable industrial tablet computers running Wonderware InTouch software to allow operations staff access the plant SCADA system throughout the site.

KEY FACTS 

Murphy have operated Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Plant since it was first commissioned in 2003. The plant treats wastewater from Galway city and its environs for a population equivalent of 170,000 ensuring that the unique environment and ecosystems in Galway Bay continue to be conserved and protected.
