Stacey Sweeney is an Articulated Dump Truck Operator currently working on our Clonburris Project in Clondalkin Co. Dublin.

Length of time working with Murphy: 4 Months

What does your role involve?

I drive a dump truck.  Mainly working alongside a digger or dozer. I move different materials around site to where they are needed.

What do you find most interesting about your role?

I like that I get to learn new things every day on the job, even from just watching the experienced operators in different machines, it’s all learning. No two days are the same.

What has been your biggest challenge at Murphy?

If I were to pick my biggest challenge since joining Murphy, as a girl in construction, it would probably be the initial thought of a new company, site and colleagues. So just the unknown at the beginning really, but I was fast in realising that none of this was an issue and everyone from ground-workers right up to management were all so welcoming and inclusive from my very first day.  Murphy sees everyone as one, which is clear to see when you are working for them, it makes the job so much easier and enjoyable for everyone.  So there hasn’t really been a tough challenge yet as such because it’s all going well for me so far.

What attracted you to the construction industry?

I always enjoyed being outdoors. I never pictured myself in an office or indoor environment all the time. Also, the great characters about construction sites, I’ve met great people already who will always give you a laugh and that makes any job better because if you can’t have a laugh now and again then you’d be as well at home!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a whole site come together and know that you played a part in the making of it.  Also knowing that Murphy wants to look after their staff and team when it comes to things such as mental health and well-being is a massive bonus as not many companies do this, so it’s rewarding to know we are looked after in that way too.

What is your proudest achievement?

I am proud of the fact that I went with what I wanted and did the dumper course to get the ticket and then proceeded to apply for a job within the industry.  I’m proud of myself mainly because it’s known to be a male-dominated industry and I still went ahead and took a chance with it all. And it couldn’t have turned out any better, so I definitely made the right decision joining the construction industry in Ireland.

What are your career aspirations?

As of now, I see myself in construction for the future and hope to operate many different machines down the line. At the minute, my main career aspiration would be to be able to go onto site as an operator and operate any machine that is needed, so I better get practicing, all lessons are welcome!

On a typical weekend, what can we expect you to be doing?

On weekends I spend time with friends and family either at home, nights out or weekends away.  I’d play football some weekends too depending on the time of year.
