Fernanda Chaves is a Graduate Project Engineer with Murphy Ireland based at our Citywest office. Fernanda has been with Murphy for two and a half years.

What do you do at Murphy?

I work as a Graduate Project Engineer. My role is mainly based in the Citywest office in Ireland. However, I visit the Ringsend [Phosphorus Fixation and Recovery] site often to follow the Project progress and develop reports with the site team. My role involves document coordination and control, assisting senior engineers with equipment purchases, and working on the commissioning plan strategies.

What do you like most about your role?
I enjoy the opportunities I get to learn from the different fields involved in the project, as well as gaining insight from each discipline. I really enjoy the learning perspective of the job and learning from more experienced colleagues.

What has been your biggest challenge at Murphy?
The fast pace of the work is the biggest challenge for me. Being responsible for the document coordination, ensuring that the client’s requirements are being attended to by all teams and team members, is crucial for the project`s success.

What attracted you to the construction industry?
The flexibility of the work. I can work on site or from the office, with quality, design and coordination, contracts. The construction industry offers a huge variety of options.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Knowing that my job in some way impacts people’s quality of life, helping them gain access to high quality, clean water is just one example of how engineering can improve lives.

What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement is getting a chance to work as an Engineer almost straight after moving from Brazil to Ireland.

What are your career aspirations?
My goal is to gain as much experience as possible and continue working as an engineer around the world.

On a typical weekend, what can we expect you to be doing?
On a typical weekend, you will see me hanging out with my friends, trying new food styles. I also love going to the cinema and exploring Ireland on weekend trips away.

Tell us a funny/interesting fact about yourself...
I came to Ireland initially only to study English for 6 months and I have now been calling Ireland home for three years!
