David Hanlon is a Steel Fabricator at the Murphy Ireland, Steel Fabrication Facility in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. He started with Murphy as an apprentice and is now with the company 8 years.

What do you do at Murphy? / What does your role involve?

I work in the structural steel workshop in Newbridge. I am involved in the processing of steel whether it is cutting, drilling, using the plasma machine or fabricating steel that will in turn become a bridge, a building or various other structural steel jobs.

What do you like most about your role?

I like how no two days are the same. Every job that comes through the workshop is different. Every day brings new challenges that we have to overcome quickly and safely, to get the job done on time and to the highest quality.

What has been your biggest challenge at Murphy?

The biggest challenge I have faced in Murphy’s was the Bewsey Street bridge. It was a 250-ton, 30-metre long and 9-metre-wide bridge. We faced many challenges with limited space and lifting capacity. Everyday had to be planned methodically. There was a lot of moving required and we needed to get cranes in to turn the bridge. All while getting the job done on schedule and everyone getting home safe every day.

What attracted you to the construction industry?

My grandfather was a welder, and my father was a foreman in the industry for many years, so every weekend and summer was spent doing something. I also liked working with my hands, so when the opportunity to do an apprenticeship with Murphy came along, I couldn’t refuse.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is getting to see a project from start to finish. Getting to see pictures of a finished project, like buildings going together or a bridge being fitted; getting feedback from the site crews saying everything went well and fitted perfectly, makes it worthwhile.

What is your proudest achievement?

Finishing my apprenticeship, achieving a merit, and getting to represent the company in the All-Ireland Skills competition in my last year as an apprentice.
