Anthony Brennan, Operations Director for Murphy Ireland's Water & Process Engineering Division, has worked with the company for 30 years. He is currently based at our Citywest office, but occasionally works from the Newry office where he was based for many years.

What do you do at Murphy? / What does your role involve?

My job as Operations Director involves working in partnership with my fellow directors of Murphy Ireland to provide strategic guidance and direction of the company and its activities in Ireland. This includes communicating effectively and maintaining formal and informal links with our key Clients such as Irish Water and their decision makers to ensure that we in Murphy are providing the best range and quality of service to them. Daily I work with Murphy Water Team Leaders and staff to develop technologically advanced engineering solutions for Water and Wastewater treatment and to ensure these are delivered in a safe, efficient and sustainable manner.

What do you like most about your role? / What do you find most interesting about your role?

What I find most interesting in my current role is the ability to influence and motivate the staff of Murphy Ireland to realise their potential as individuals and to harness this potential in a collegial manner for the benefit of Murphy in Ireland.

What has been your biggest challenge at Murphy?

My biggest challenge since undertaking my role as Operational Director in January 2021 has been to develop new leaders within the various disciplines in Murphy Water - all within the context of the Covid pandemic where the ability to communicate with staff wasn’t easy. This challenge is an ongoing task so as to provide encouragement and belief to our staff, one and all to become key players and decision makers on a winning Murphy Water Team.

What attracted you to the construction industry?

What I found attractive about the construction industry is the ability of those of us in construction to improve the quality of people’s lives in an effective manner and thereby improve the prosperity of people in this country.  For many years Ireland lacked the infrastructure to compete on the world stage.  All of us in Murphy Ireland are playing our part in delivering this badly needed infrastructure.

Secondly from my schooldays I retained a keen interest in the capacity to manage the most precious of our natural resources, namely water and to play my part in providing safe clean drinking water for society and industry and providing safe and sustainable treatment processes for the wastewater society generates.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

What I find most rewarding is working with committed staff who constantly endeavour to do their upmost for Murphy and the Water Industry they serve.  With such a team I feel assured that no matter what the technical challenge or problem we meet, we will have the capability of developing a solution so that we in Murphy always deliver.

What is your proudest achievement?

In a professional context I’m always reluctant to use the term 'proud.' However, I have gained considerable satisfaction developing and working with the outstanding team in our Newry office on our continual work portfolio at Belfast WwTW. This is Northern Ireland’s largest wastewater treatment facility where we have been working with NI Water as their preferred contractor from 2015 and have ongoing committed projects at this Works into 2023.

What are your career aspirations?

My career aspiration is to lead Murphy Water to be the biggest and most technically proficient Water Contracting entity in Ireland, be it municipal or industrial.

On a typical weekend, what can we expect you to be doing?

On a typical weekend I like to

First and foremost, catch up and spend quality time with those most special to me, wife Breege and our children, Finbarr, Cáit, Aodhan & Orlaith.

Partake in some farming at home in Monaghan where we breed pedigree Limousin cattle.

Also, you will find me on the GAA football pitch in Drumhowan where I am involved in coaching my local club Senior Team.

Tell us a funny/interesting fact about yourself...

Most people wouldn’t suspect that I’ve been an actor in many Irish plays, most of them comedies in the last decade.
