Double Green World Award win

Murphy has achieved international recognition by winning two Green World Environment Awards in the global search for the world’s greenest countries, companies, and communities.

Sustainable Plant Solutions

The first award, a Green World Champion Award, went to our Plant team, who entered their ongoing sustainability initiatives in the Building & Construction – Carbon Reduction category. The initiatives included:

  1. Building & Construction and category Carbon Reduction for fossil-free operations in practice with HVO use and full electric 13 tonne excavator,  cut CO₂ by >99% during trials and saved 374 litres of fuel  (in collaboration with Elstree).
  2. Building & Construction and category Fuel Efficiency for trial of battery-electric telehandler replacing diesel, eliminating fumes and stoppages. Weekly savings of ~108 kg CO₂e and 20–30 litres of fuel—equivalent to 5.6 tCO₂e a year, or driving a petrol car 14–15k miles (in collaboration with JLH at Tru East).

Collaborative Climate Action

The second award, a Silver Green World Award, went to our Uxbridge Moor project team who entered their contribution to sustainable construction in the Building & Construction – Sustainability category.

The judges highlighted the project’s early and practical adoption of hydrogen power, delivered through close collaboration between Murphy, National Grid, and GeoPura. This marks the first time Murphy has deployed hydrogen power on a major strategic construction project, providing a rare opportunity to test the technology at scale in a live, high‑demand environment.

A 250kW Hydrogen Power Unit (HPU) powered the project’s North Compound, replacing traditional temporary power sources such as diesel generators or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) units. While HVO offers a lower‑carbon alternative to diesel, it does not eliminate pollutants such as NOx or particulate matter. The hydrogen system avoided these emissions entirely and significantly reduced noise levels on site.

During the initial deployment period, the HPU displaced 4,744 litres of diesel‑generator‑equivalent fuel, eliminating approximately 6 tonnes of CO₂, 59 kg of NOx, 2.3 kg of particulate matter, and 31.8 kg of carbon monoxide. These reductions delivered clear improvements in air quality, carbon reduction, and working conditions for the workforce and surrounding community.

The judges also recognised that this deployment is highly unusual within the construction sector, where temporary power is still predominantly provided by diesel generators. Using hydrogen as the primary power source for a major compound demonstrated that cleaner alternatives could meet the operational demands of a large, complex infrastructure project. The trial provided valuable evidence that hydrogen can be integrated safely, reliably, and efficiently into construction environments that traditionally rely on combustion‑based power.

In addition to the hydrogen deployment to date, the project demonstrated a wider commitment to reducing environmental impact across multiple aspects of construction. This includes the use of Instagrid portable battery systems to minimise reliance on combustion‑based tools, EV charging and electric pool vehicles to support low‑emission travel, and SUREGROUND low‑carbon soil stabilisation, a reversible treatment that reduces the need for imported aggregate and cuts vehicle movements.

Together, these measures reinforced the project’s practical, whole‑site approach to cleaner construction whilst delivering world class infrastructure.

Selected from more than 500 nominations worldwide, our teams, along with their project partners, were presented with their trophies and certificates at a glittering presentation ceremony held at the iconic Cardiff Castle, Wales.

The Green World Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding, and promoting environmental excellence across the globe.

In keeping with the environmental values at the heart of the awards, trees will be planted to offset the carbon footprint created by the prizegiving event.
