What do you do at Murphy?

I came to Murphy for a 12-month placement, with the aim to learn and experience as much as possible about the contractor's side of engineering before returning to university to complete my Master's degree. As a result, I get to see a good number of projects at various stages of completion and on variety of scales. I spend most of my time assisting the Contractors Responsible Engineers from structures and earthworks, here at Golborne, with a variety of tasks - including calculations and design checks, as well as planning and safety. As we move further into 2019, I will be spending more time out on site being mentored by an engineer.

What do you find most interesting about your role?

This is my first role since leaving university, so being able to experience so many different projects is a real eye-opener. Working in rail, I get a view at some of the complex operations and plant involved with working in possessions. Really, the most interesting part of my role is that every day I am learning something new in a high-energy environment.

What are you career aspirations?

Following on from completing my Master's Degree (hopefully) next year, my main focus is to become a Chartered Engineer and along with that I would like progress as an engineer with Murphy – in rail or elsewhere as/if the opportunity arises.
