Murphy was appointed by Westmeath County Council to deliver Saunders Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge in Mullingar. This project required coordinated delivery between the steel fabrication team in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, while our Transport and Infrastructure team managed the civils element of the works on site in Mullingar. Our team in Newbridge constructed the 40-metre, curved bridge which weighed over 40 Tonnes. The scope of works included the fabrication and installation of the bridge structure, construction of the bridge abutments and delivery of the associated civil engineering works. This project was delivered to improve public connectivity whilst supporting active travel and sustainable transport, for pedestrians and cyclists. This bridge was installed in a single night with the two sections lifted into position using a 700-tonne crane. The new bridge provides a high‑quality, fully accessible crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, improving connectivity between key residential areas, schools and amenities. Designed to encourage walking and cycling for everyday journeys, the new bridge forms an important part of the town’s wider active travel network. This project was funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority’s Active Travel Investment Programme.
