{"id":846,"date":"2023-05-15T14:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T13:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.murphygroup.com\/?p=846"},"modified":"2024-10-02T16:23:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T15:23:41","slug":"record-breaking-pour-of-cement-free-concrete-at-london-power-tunnels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.murphygroup.com\/staging\/record-breaking-pour-of-cement-free-concrete-at-london-power-tunnels\/","title":{"rendered":"Record-Breaking Pour of Cement-Free Concrete at *London Power Tunnels*"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>National Grid and its contractor HOCHTIEF-MURPHY Joint Venture (HMJV) have completed the world\u2019s largest ever continuous pour of Earth Friendly Concrete\u00ae at London Power Tunnels, a \u00a31bn project to rewire London.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>736m3, or 736,000 litres (enough to fill around two 25m swimming pools) of more sustainable, cement-free concrete was poured to fill the base of the 55m deep tunnel drive shaft at National Grid\u2019s Hurst Substation in South London. The cement free solution was developed by Wagners and supplied by Capital Concrete and uses a binder of ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash geopolymer concrete system chemically activated by the use of industrial waste products instead of cement. The concrete reduces carbon by around 64%, saving an estimated 111kg of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;per cubic metre poured in comparison to concrete that would have traditionally been used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of Earth Friendly Concrete was driven forward by a team of young engineers on the project and supported by HMJV\u2019s engineering experts and AECOM, Mott MacDonald and WSP, following several trials at different London Power Tunnels sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record-breaking pour on Earth Day (22 April) at National Grid\u2019s Hurst substation site was needed to infill the base of the 55m deep tunnel shaft to its permanent level, following the successful completion of 9.2km of tunnelling over 2 tunnel drives from Hurst to Eltham and Crayford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere on the London Power Tunnels project, there are several measures in place to reduce the environmental impact of construction and keep National Grid on track to achieve net zero carbon construction&nbsp;by 2025\/26. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Optimisation of designs and construction methodologies of the tunnel and shafts network by HMJV saving approximately 50,000 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>, leading to a 30% reduction against baseline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>99.98% of project waste being diverted away from landfill, a 21% reduction against the carbon reduction pre-project baseline for shafts, tunnels and headhouses, equivalent to 25,250 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalgrid.com%2Fnational-grid-avoids-emissions-london-power-tunnels-substation-green-grid-technology&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cjonathanrichardson%40murphygroup.co.uk%7C6a49955b4a9c456948dd08db553cda03%7C17aae19672ea47f9b8c1e442263f82f2%7C0%7C0%7C638197492059262046%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=moAHsVAmv84OFUFV%2F23VAFLEW96RlkZbKlf8TjC3Hrs%3D&amp;reserved=0\">A new 400kV substation<\/a>&nbsp;at the heart of the project in Bengeworth Road, Lambeth will be built using SF<sub>6<\/sub>&nbsp;free gas insulated switchgear technology in a UK first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This world record-breaking pour also offers the opportunity to evaluate the technology ahead of future possible rollout across our network in England and Wales, demonstrating our ambition to achieve net zero construction across all our projects by 2025\/26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Grid Project Director, Onur Aydemir said:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cWe are always looking for new ways to innovate and to now be using this carbon saving cement-free alternative to conventional concrete at scale and on site is exciting.
