Project Team Lend a Hand at Hanwell Zoo

On Tuesday 17 July Murphy's project team working on Hanwell Station as part of preparations for the new Elizabeth Line and staff from TfL helped transform an unused area at Hanwell Zoo into an area for Java Sparrows.

Hanwell zoo is situated a short distance from Hanwell station where Murphy are currently constructing step-free access as part of a 'access for all' (AFA) project that includes three other future Elizabeth Line stations on the Great Western Route.

As part of Murphy's SHESQ initiative 'Simple Actions' the team of 14 spent the whole day transforming the unused area into an aviary which can now be enjoyed by over 80,000 visitors this year. The skill set and organisation within the team meant the structure of the aviary was put up much quicker than the zoo had imagined which was extremely appreciated by the manager of Hanwell Zoo, Jim Gregory.

He said: "Thank you ever so much for all the work Murphy and TFL did yesterday. You were the most productive group we have had in and I never envisaged you would get so far.

"This development is really important to a community facility such as ours. It allows many of the community groups we work with such as Ealing youth justice programme, who will put in a planting scheme and art box. Our on site collection of artists, some of whom have special educational needs, will now begin to develop the interpretation for this area.

Murphy's senior project manager on the LOCROSW project, Tom Lacy also added: "This was an initiative that was both inspired and led by our project team. It benefited the local community and also strengthened our relationships with key project stakeholder representatives who attended from TfL and Network Rail. It is a great example of the team identifying opportunities to develop win-win relationships and was also great fun being involved in."
