The extension of Belview AGI provided a new distribution supply to Waterford City.

PROJECT OUTLINE

BBCLG / Gas Networks Ireland appointed Murphy International to carry out construction for the extension of Belview AGI to install a new distribution supply to Waterford City. The upgrade consisted of an extension to the existing AGI and installation of a new Pressure Reduction System complete with GRP Building, Packaged Boiler Unit and associated pipework.

The Works included installation of:

  • Installation and commissioning of a new 70-4bar Pressure Reduction Skid
  • Installation of Boiler & Instrumentation Kiosk
  • All associated civil, mechanical, and ancillary works

KEY CHALLENGES

The Project scope was to extend Belview AGI in order to provide a new distribution supply to Waterford City.

Existing fencing was removed and the station was extended to the north presenting challenges as earth moving operations were hindered by an existing settlement pond and embankment. This was overcome by rerouting plant movements within a narrow corridor internally in the station whilst maintaining access for GNI Operations and other site works. The site team liaised continuously with GNI Operations to ensure that there was no interruption to gas flow in the ‘live’ section of the AGI. Projects within live gas stations require strict control under GNI Permit to Work systems. All operatives and staff were trained in safe Control of Operations at the outset of the Project.

PROJECT DELIVERY AND INNOVATIONS

Through careful planning of the works Murphy succeeded in prefabricating a large quantity of components required off-site. This ensured that welding and coating could be carried out to the highest safety and quality standards in fabrication shop conditions rather than on-site.

KEY FACTS

  • Works carried out accident free.
  • No interruptions to the operation of the AGI.
  • All welding, inspection, testing and commissioning carried out through direct delivery.
