Birchwood Access for All Scheme (AFA)

Installation of two new lifts at Birchwood Station

Project outline

Murphy was employed to install two new lifts at Birchwood Station in Warrington, and complete associated construction work.  The lifts needed to be installed on either side of the platform in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.

The station comprises of two operational platforms serving the Manchester to Liverpool lines, providing services for local and long distance destinations. The tracks and single station storey buildings are located at ground level with level access off the North and South entrances.

Key challenges

Due to delays with the civil installation at the beginning of the project, the electrical installation works had to be completed in half of the original programmed duration. Other challenges included:

  • working within the platform areas whilst the station remained operational
  • working on existing platform duct routes in possession times to install all the new cabling for CCTV, the public address system and all associated lighting cables
  • coordinating work with the station training operating company to remove existing equipment so that the bridge could be installed.
  • installation of powder coated containment

Project delivery and innovation

We were able to complete the project on time by adding extra resources and working over a number of weekends.  Careful planning and preparation, effective team work, and clear communications with all stakeholders were also key to the successful delivery of this project.

The transfer of existing station supply was the last stage to the electrical installation. This required changing over from the existing metered supply to the new metered supply within the new DNO switchroom (provided as part of the project to allow extra electricity capacity for the new lift supplies). Working closely with the electricity supplier and the station and train operating companies we coordinated a power outage of all services.  This gave us a seven hour window between 22:00hrs and 05:00hrs to isolate the existing supply, install our new supply from the new DNO and get the station operational again. All work was completed within the timescales and the new bridge lighting and lift lighting was fully operational on schedule.
